The Coming of the Holy Spirit – Pentecost

We are in the midst of the Flavor of Pentecost. Nigh of us acquaintance Pentecost with the inflow of the Holy Spirit, the promised Counselor, to the disciples in the Upper Room. This account is given by Luke in Acts ii. Nearly Christians are very familiar with this business relationship.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in i place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a trigger-happy wind came from heaven and filled the whole firm where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:i-four

Pentecost is as well widely recognized equally the birthdate of the Church, the Body of Christ.

John's Account (John 20:19-23)

Jesus Appears to His Disciples19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fearfulness of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do non forgive them, they are not forgiven."

At that place are some major differences between John's account in his Gospel and Luke's in Acts. In that location are also some potent similarities.

Differences:

In John'due south account, this result happens on the day of Jesus' resurrection, not some 40 days later Pentecost.

Jesus Himself appears to the disciples in the mankind in John. (This itself is a fact of major importance in John'southward Gospel, the subject of another blog)

Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit onto (into) the disciples. Annotation the similarity of this with the account of the creation of Man from Genesis two:7:

the LORD God formed the man from the grit of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the jiff of life, and the human being became a living being.

Only ten of the Original Twelve were in the room when Jesus appeared to them. Thomas was not there. The Bible does not clearly country whether other followers of Jesus were present.

Similarities:

The disciples were locked in a room for fear of the Sanhedrin and Romans.

The Holy Spirit was delivered without opening the doors or windows.

The disciples were immediately filled with the Holy Spirit (the breath of life).

And so, what should we make of these differences between Luke'south account and that of John?

I believe not much. Each of the Gospels was written to reach different things, to focus on dissimilar issues and audiences. While both accounts (and on a greater scale, the Gospel of John and the Volume of Acts) contain details, Luke is concerned with chronology while John is not. The details in John's account are intended to address specific issues, peculiarly those raised by the Gnostics.

As Pentecost Lord's day approaches, for me it is a time to review these two differing accounts of the arrival of the Holy Spirit and to aggrandize my noesis and understanding of the role the Spirit plays in a Christian's life.
